Nowadays, booking a flight online is more about opting out of what you don’t want than it is about getting what you want. Whether you’re flying with a low-cost carrier or a high-end carrier like Singapore Airlines, the airline will always try to sell you travel insurance. It was a very convenient method of purchasing travel insurance. However, airline travel insurance has had its fair share of problems in the past. Singapore Airlines once caused a stir when customers complained about being auto-enrolled in travel insurance, despite the fact that many were unaware that they could opt out. In this blog, read about airline travel insurance coverage in Singapore.

How reliable are these airline travel insurance policies?

Should you purchase travel insurance after booking your trip? Most airlines require you to confirm your flight reservation before offering you the option to purchase airline travel insurance. Unlike other types of travel insurance, most airline travel insurance does not have a set price.

Prices are determined by your medical history, personal information, and other factors, and you will receive a personalized quote from the airline. Some airlines, including Singapore Airlines (SIA), Scoot, and Jetstar, offer fixed fares.

Coverage for Medical and Covid-19

Most of us, perhaps, purchase airline travel insurance primarily for flight cancellation and disruption coverage. Medical expenses abroad and emergency medical evacuation? I wasn’t thinking about it, but it would be great if it was included. Most airline travel insurance policies cover overseas medical expenses and emergency medical evacuation. The terms and conditions are also largely similar.

Trip Delays and Cancellations

Most people file their first travel insurance claim not because they need to be airlifted home after a tragic accident, but because their trip was disrupted due to a hiccup or because they encountered a cancelled flight.

Missed Flights

Are you on the verge of missing your connecting flight? You must be wondering what to do and whether your airline will cover the missed flight connection – and if so, how much? In general, if you miss your flight due to poor scheduling or late arrival, your airline should automatically book you on another flight (and cover your hotel airport stay if it’s the next day).

Flights that are overbooked

What are overbooked flights in the context of travel insurance? If your flight is overbooked and you are unable to board (and no alternatives are available within X number of hours), your travel insurance plan will reimburse you for a small sum of money.
Most airline travel insurance policies do not cover overbooking.

You can, however, try to make a claim under one of the other categories, such as travel delay, but keep in mind that they’ll usually require the delay to be caused by a natural disaster, civil unrest, or something similar before they’ll let you receive a payout.

Coverage of Covid-19

The likelihood of you obtaining Covid-19 overseas is probably greater than the likelihood of you being kidnapped or held hostage. The good news is that most airline travel insurance policies now include Covid-19 coverage.
