Moving Internationally?

Moving overseas calls for choosing a relocation service provider who’s going to partner with you to help you move. This is one of the toughest decisions to make because the rest of your relocating journey will depend on the company you choose. Research thoroughly before you make your decision as it is important you partner with the right service provider. It is a good idea to compare similar services, their prices, and what they offer.

Here’s a list of factors, based on our experience as an international moving company to look for, while you compare international moving quotes

What to Look for?

When comparing quotes, your first instinct will be to look for favourable prices. By default, you will notice the one that’s providing the cheapest rates. However, prices are not the only thing while relocating internationally as there are many more important services which you will require. Look for the following:

  • Right Accreditation/Licenses
  • DTHC – Destination Terminal Handling Charges
  • Additional Packaging Charges
  • Cubic Volume / Weight
First things first, Right Accreditation

There are many accreditations and licensing but for International Moving, look for the following

  • FIDI/FAIM – Federal Association of International Movers
  • FMC – Licensing
  • IAM – International Association of Movers
  • AMSA – American Moving and Storage Association

What Licensing & Accreditations mean?

For licensing, ensure with absolute certainty that the moving company is fully licensed, insured, and bonded with the proper authorities. Companies with  no accreditations are a complete No! No!

Look for FMC (Federal Maritime Commission). If your moving company doesn’t have this license, then you may be in for some big trouble. If you ship with an unlicensed carrier and something happens to your shipment, then the company will avoid all responsibility and you’ll be left dealing with the loss of goods and 3rd parties.

Your relocation service provider should also have Association membership. It is one of the most important things to gauge credibility. Companies like IAM, FIDI, and AMSA all have strict requirements for accreditation by their organizations. If your relocation partner has any of these accreditations, be rest assured on the highest level of safety and security for your shipment.

Destination Terminal Handling Charges

When you receive a moving quote check if it includes the Destination Terminal Handling Charges (DTHC). This is to ensure all the costs are clearly explained to you at the beginning. Hidden charges can be one of the worse things to come across especially when you have just moved to a new country. So, check for DTHC beforehand, so that there are no surprises later.

Many Relocation companies have alternate terms for Destination Terminal Handling Charges like –
  • Destination Fees
  • THC
  • Terminal Handling Charges
  • Destination Port Charges
  • Terminal Port Charges

Additional Packing Charges

Consult with your relocation partner beforehand on additional charges that may apply. These could be hidden costs like packaging charges and others. So, have an in-depth discussion on all kinds of charges you have to pay for, to avoid confusion and extra costs later.

Cubic Volume / Weight

Compare the cubic volume/weight prices too, while you receive quotes from different moving companies. Pay attention to detail, like in case if a company’s quote is lower but they are also offering a lower weight it needs to be adjusted to have a fair comparison.
