A move can be a stressful and emotional time in someone’s life. However, whether you’re relocating for a job in a new city or simply moving away from family, a little planning can go a long way towards avoiding the stress and anxiety that comes with relocation. In this blog, we tell you about relocation tips for expats.

‍Relocation Tips for Expats

Things to do before relocating

Investigate your new location – Maybe you already have a place to live or not. In any case, research is your best ally before relocating somewhere new. What are the entertainment and leisure options in the new location? What are your school options if you have children?

Choose a good neighbourhood – Can you physically visit your new home/neighborhood before moving in? If it isn’t, Google Maps can help you figure out what to expect. Take a look around at the houses. What are the nearest amenities? Is it simple to get around by car, foot, or public transportation?
Prepare for your move by using moving checklists and labels. Remember to label all of your boxes to make unpacking easier and to avoid losing important items. Keep important documents and personal items close at hand, and plan ahead of time for eating and sleeping.

Things to do after relocating

Organize and unpack – Ascertain that all of your belongings have arrived safely at your new location. Remember to unpack essential items first, such as bedding and toiletries, because you’ll want to shower and sleep well after a long day of travelling and packing, and unpacking. Allow a few days to become acquainted with your new surroundings.

Make new friends – Introducing yourself to your next-door neighbours may feel awkward at first, but it will help you not only gain local knowledge about your new location, but it may also help you make new friends. If you’re starting a new job, talk to your new coworkers. Building a support network of new friends and neighbours will help you combat loneliness if you relocate away from family.

Make sure that your children and pets are accustomed to their new surroundings – Moving with children, as well as moving with pets, can be difficult. It is critical to have snacks and drinks available for your children, as well as food and water (and travel-safe bowls) for your pets. If you’re driving, plan your route accordingly, as bathroom breaks will be more frequent when travelling with a child, especially a young one. Prepare entertainment by downloading movies and games to a phone or tablet, and keep toys nearby rather than inside the moving truck.

Participate in the community – Now that you’ve settled in and unpacked, met your new neighbours, and learned about the area around your new home, it’s time to establish a new routine. Volunteering at a nursing home or animal shelter, joining a gym, church, or book club, or simply getting out and exploring will help you feel more at ease and avoid homesickness.
