Why Insurance for your House Help

House help or maid, is an integral part of your life, particularly if you are a working couple with small kids. Life would become really difficult if you do not have a house help to work in your house, kitchen and take care of your kids when you are at work. In this scenario, you must have domestic help insurance popularly known as Maid Insurance.

Most of the Insurance companies provide “Comprehensive” coverage to cover medical expenses, personal accident, wage compensation, repatriation and theft etc. You should make sure that the insurance you are buying for your maid is quite comprehensive and covers most of the aspects. This is for her health and your peace of mind.

Before your domestic helper arrives in Singapore, you are required by law to ensure she is covered by medical insurance and personal accident insurance. Almost all plans consistently provide $60,000 in personal accident coverage. It is worth noticing that maid insurance includes hospitalisation benefits and surgical expenses. If your domestic help gets ill or gets injured and is hospitalised, her medical bills can be claimed. This way your maid will get appropriate will get proper medical aid, without you incurring any costs on the same.

As personal accident coverage is mandatory and is pegged at $60,000, hence if your maid meets an accident which leads to her death or permanent disability, your insurance policy must offer coverage of at least $60,000.

Further, if your maid dies or is permanently disabled, there is a provision of repatriation benefit offered by some insurance companies, so that she can fly back home.

How to get Insurance ?

If you are hiring a maid from anywhere but Malaysia, you will be required by MOM to buy a $5,000 bond from a bank or insurance company. Besides, if you’re hiring a Filipino maid, you will also have to issue the Philippine Embassy with a Letter of Guarantee for a security bond of up to $7,000. This letter should come from a reputable insurance company and be valid for at least two years.

So, make sure your insurer will cover you for the bonds. This means they will undertake to pay the government/Embassy if the bond is forfeited, and then recover the costs from you.

Some maid insurance policies also pay a small daily allowance per day if she is hospitalized or unable to work due to illness. This is meant to compensate you for your maid’s wages so that she is still able to earn her wage while she is recovering from her illness.

Hence, do not overlook this aspect of insurance when you have a maid or planning to have one in Singapore.
