Studying in Germany

If you are relocating with kids, or want to further your skills set, then a country’s educational system is a big deal. Germany is known for its high standards of education- public school is offered for free and private education monitored by the Government to keep the tuition fees in check. English though, is not a standard mode of instruction, so if your kids do not know how to speak German, then an international school is the way to go. Despite the high-quality of education, expats still opt for the tried and tested international schools – just in case they need credentials in their next country of assignment.

What a typical school day is like

School in Germany starts at 8 in the morning and ends at two in the afternoon. However, it is best to leave room for extra-curricular activities for older kids. If your child does not speak German just yet, use those extra hours in the day to learn the language.

It is best to time your move to Germany before September, as this is the start of the school year and so that you have ample time to settle in.

Aside from the usual subjects, there is standard R.E. or Religious Education. Parents can choose to exempt their children from R.E. or the students themselves can personally request to be exempted if they are 14 years old and above.

Education options for every age

If you have a child 6 years or younger, then you are in luck- the country has numerous daycare systems that you can choose from. However, be prepared to open your check books to avail of these high-quality child services and be prepared to be on a long waiting list as well.

The state mandates that children of 14 or 16 years of age attend school which is free if you choose public institutions.

International Schools

If you are frequently rotated in and out of your Company’s territories, then taking your child to an international school is the right decision for you. Each of the major metropolitan cities from Berlin to Wiesbaden has at least one, so no matter where you end up, your child’s education will definitely be supported.

Whichever school you may choose, your son or daughter will most likely be required to take an admission test. You will also be required to present a birth certificate, valid passport, medical records and a teacher recommendation letter.

How Much Does It Cost to Study in Germany for International Students?

It is free for international and local students to study at public universities in Germany; however, there are administration fees of around 250 EUR (285 USD) per semester that everyone has to pay. Private Universities charge around 21,068 EUR (22,800 USD) per year.
