Visa for India: Process

Since a few years now, the Indian Government has provided an all-inclusive online portal Indian Government’s Visa Application so you can easily apply for a visa wherever you are. After booking an appointment for an interview at the closest Indian Embassy, Consulate, or Mission near you, you can hand in your documents and answer any query they have. For the interview, you would need to carry your passport valid for a minimum of 180 days, two recent passport-size photographs and the completed visa application form.

If your visa requires, you may have to register locally and visit the Foreigners Regional Registration Office when you arrive in the country within a few days of your arrival. Your visa will mention the details of the same.

Business visa
For industrial or business entrepreneurs for commercial activities or to set up new ventures.
Documents required:

Employment visa
For foreigners looking to work in a company in India, whether it is voluntarily at an Indian NGO or a paid job at a multinational company. This visa is valid for a year and can be renewed at your respective FRRO (Foreigners Regional Registration Office). Documents required:

▸ Professional qualifications
▸ Academic qualifications

Project visa
For foreigners working on projects in the power and steel industry only.
Diplomatic/Official visas – For those assigned to their country’s Indian mission, diplomatic/official/UN passport holders working in the UN or other international organizations in India.

Journalist visa
For professional journalists and photographers on an assignment registered with the Press Information Bureau of the Government of India. This visa can also be applied by Journalists who travel to India for the purpose of travel writing or photography. This visa is valid for 6 months only.

Conference visa
For those attending official conferences, seminars, or workshops organized either by a government or public agency, or by a recognized educational institution.
Main document required:
▸ Approval of the relevant authority.

Research visa
For those entering the country for research and development purposes. This visa is valid for the research period or 3 years. Documents required:
▸ A research proposal
▸ Proof of financial resources
▸ A letter of admission from a recognized university
