Singaporeans who work as expats in other countries have both good & bad to share about their experiences. For some the grass is greener on the other side and for some others it’s not. Of course, every person’s experience is different than the other and one can’t generalize them. Here we have curated a list of 6 points that are common to most Singaporeans who live and work abroad.

Increased Taxes

Singapore has lower tax rates and once Singaporeans move overseas they have to adapt to the tax systems of that country, which is higher than that of Singapore. Not only taxes, the goods & services tax in Singapore is comparatively low as well. So, for Singaporeans living overseas tax rates are a challenge.

Extra efforts for Safety concerns

Law enforcement in Singapore is strict and it is one of the safest countries to live in. Most Singaporeans living overseas feel that they have to be wary and look over their shoulder while out in the streets at night. Contrary to this, most people in Singapore feel safe venturing out at night. This is one factor that Singaporeans have to be prepared for while choosing a career abroad.

Efficiency & Predictability

Singaporeans who have a career abroad miss the ease of service and know-how of things back in their home country. For example –round-the-clock services, ease of information gathering, rules and regulation, and many more such day-to-day living necessities.

Work-Life balance

Not everything is a downside about working overseas. A collective sentiment that runs across most Singaporeans is that they get to enjoy a better work-life balance living out of the country, as compared to working in Singapore. People appreciate a higher quality of life and relaxed work hours.

Lifestyle

Some Singaporeans tend to enjoy the lifestyle they get to live overseas. Less regulations have some upside too, like the ability to park your vehicle on the street-side without much worry, etc. Also, party-goers can enjoy a wide variety of weekend events and many more liberties.

Cultural Differences

It is very common for people to face cultural differences when they move out of their native country. Similarly, Singaporeans working abroad face a culture shock. However, this is only limited to the initial stage of a Singaporean’s life abroad. With time and social exchanges, people learn to adapt to their surroundings and culture.
